Back in his early adulthood, my husband had a roommate who named his cat “Surprise”. Sometimes he would ask my husband to call the cat in for him (if he was at work or something), so imagine someone walking around in LA calling, “Surprise! Surprise!”
I had a cat who did that too. He’s SPRINT out to greet me then stop short and lick himself. “Oh, you’re home. That’s cool.” He didn’t fool me. He loved us as much as we loved him.

Sure selective hearing can work the other way too, but cats are persistent attention seekers too.

By any chance that’s Binky the clown? (from the early years of this comic and the TV series Garfield & Friends)
