Gracie: Baldo, your brain doesn't retain information when you stay up late cramming for a test. Baldo: I know that! That's why I get a good night's sleep... Baldo: And cram at breakfast.
Everyone’s experience is different. I don’t even know if any of my schools HAD sports (and if so, which ones) up through college, but was taught study skills many times. My children are in elementary, and being taught to divvy up studying and long-term projects into small steps done daily.
A lot of things in the world really do improve, and our knowledge about how we learn helps. Won’t say it’s the same everywhere, or that many inner-city schools have the same experience, but the middle classes and up seem to be doing better all the time.
Even so, a little cramming is quite the experience. I’ve seen a lot of friends bond that way!
gt58When we were in Canada, it took my kids three years to discover their school had a football team, and never found out US high school or Canadian professional rules. House teams (as in Harry Potter) were the major physical activity for all.

As one that’s been through college, I beg to differ on her assessment. It may not retain it in long-term memory, but works for short-term.
