Look! Over there! See that? Those are humpback whales! They're making bubbles to keep schools of fish... In place... So they can... Swim up and... Eat... Eddie, what are you doing? Those things are under the boat?!
We kayaked after the whale watching. At one point, when we were headed out deeper into the bay, I asked our guide, Pyper, if now would be a good time to admit that the ocean creeps me out. He understood completely, and was similarly creeped out- the idea that there are huge things right underneath you carries you right back to being a child worried about monsters under the bed. Years ago, I beat the lesser fear of rivers I had, but the ocean fear remains.

At least it’s a substantial boat and not one of those rubber rafts that are like a bath toy to a whale.

I’m glad he mentioned whale bubbling – it’s really an incredible sight to see. Even our guides were excited.

Yes, they’re that big . . . until you have one surface right beside your boat when you’re hanging over the rail . .

I just got back from a cruise in Alaska. Whale watching was one of the highlights of the trip!

As someone who has paddled in a canoe past ’gators, I get it… and stay on dry land.
