“Nathaniel and Gertrude” Sounds like a love story to me.

I think we all want Nate to finally get a girlfriend, but he’s a cartoon character, poor guy. He was screwed from the moment he found out she was a seventh-grader.

Women’s names go out of style much faster than men’s. I’ve never known a Gertrude. It apparently was a very popular name in the 1890s-1920s. You never know, maybe it will come back. But I doubt it.

Stephan Pastis once said that having a character react in the last panel is too obvious a sign that a joke has been told, but after this strip and the previous two-no offense-I am beginning wonder whether that is truly the case. To me, Nate’s reactions have only served to increase the comedic effect
