I make faces at them. Sometimes they laugh and sometimes they just keep staring, making me feel like an idiot.

Sign in my vet’s office, “all unattended children will be give a double espresso extra sweet, and a kitten/puppy to take home”. I have yet to see a loose kid around there and that includes the 4 footed variety, also.
