1. Funny how rolls are reversed in the last panel, and “Frank” has taken on the Benny persona. 2. It’s nice to see that someone still remembers the word “persiflage”!
The Jack Benny show was before my time. I’m a late boomer, and I wasn’t born yet or was very young when it was on. I did get introduced to it in my late teens when cable and Nick at Night showed me the delights of Burns and Allen and Jack Benny and Bringing up Daddy. Loved them then, love them now. And I totally get this character and dialogue because I was able to watch the show as a young adult. I would imagine younger readers are totally lost!!
I do remember Jack Benny and other radio shows of the 40s, but I also listen to an old-time radio show, The Big Broadcast (Ed Walker, WAMU-FM, Washington DC). I guess the shows are downloadable, but I’n almost as old as Skeezix, so I prefer MP3 discs from such sites as OTRCAT. (Can’t find any 78s.)
I am really starting to like the salesperson. Joel told me when he came over for coffee and a pipe this morning, that he would still be willing to help Skeezix out. But he isn’t holding his breath.
