My preferred barber shop has four chairs and never seems anywhere near as busy as it was when I first started going there more than ten years ago. But they give a discount on the kind of haircut I get and there’s never a wait, so I keep going back every two or three months. I suspect the owner also owns the strip mall they’re currently in, and thrives on the rent so the barber shop needn’t be all that busy.
I always wanted to get a barber shop shave. A genuine straight razor barber shop shave . But I couldn’t afford it and really didn’t need one when I was younger. But I don’t know of a barber shop that does that now a days. And if there is one, I doubt I could afford it (again).
I get my hair cut at the same shop for nearly 45 years. Not same barber, there have been five different barbers over the years; but same shop. Two chairs – two barbers.
This is how I stay current on all the local community gossip, and get a chance to chat with old friends and meet new…
In the old-time barber shops in Hong Kong, where I have spent most of my life since age 14 (I’m now over 60), the barbers always used to finish up all hair cuts with a straight razor to even up the sideburns and get the fuzz off the back of the neck. I haven’t seen that done for many years and had almost forgotten about it until I saw what people have said here.
I went to one of those nationwide “chain” barber joints once. The girl who was “assigned” to cut my hair, she looked like she was about 16 years old, asked me what number I was. I said I can go number 1 or number 2, which would you like?
I left without a haircut or going number 1 or number 2…

then I wouldn’t worry until the barber held the blade a little lower on your body than your neck.
