Goat; What are you doing, Rat?
Rat: I got a job writing scholarly film criticism. Check out my first movie review.
Someone should hit the director with a stick.
Goat: I take it you didn't like it.
Rat: I dunno. I haven't seen it.
We always criticize what we don’t understand. Which is a really stupid and trite cliché. It has too many words and who really believes in its “message” ?; )
What Rat should really be hitting with a stick is the newspaper and TV ads touting films that have absolutely nothing to do with the actual movie. I’ve been repeatedly misled about the content and rented or gone to see movies in which I was not interested.
Most directors need to be hit with a stick. Also politicians, journalists, used-car salesmen, lawyers, billionaires, diplomats, activists and — at the risk of repeating myself — con artists.
I might be swayed by a critic whose reviews have generally agreed with my own thinking, otherwise I just see the film. No one is a better critic than I am (or you are). The others may know more film history and technical terminology, but that doesn’t help me while I watch Robin Williams tell Matt Damon it’s not his fault. I get emotional no matter what any critic may have said.

Rat should coach people on doing interviews. He’s obviously great at getting jobs that he’s lousy at.

There are very few films out now where the director should not be hit with a stick.

Guys I think you’ve got it all wrong, he’s probably reviewing something by Michael Bay or M. Night Shymalan.
