    In 1868, just a few years after the end of the Civil War with its 600,000+ casualties and the abolition of slavery, maybe folks thought the U.S. wasn’t looking like such an attractive destination for immigrants.

    Children of “Citizens of other countries” born in another country have dual citizenship. That of “Where they’re born” and “Where their parents are citizens.” That’s why Obama qualified for President even IF he was born outside the US.

    Lalo’s point about the Mayflower is irrelevant as the Pilgrims were British subjects. There was no such thing as American citizenship until July 1776.
