You have to take into consideration the old trope about cavemen beating their mates on the head and then dragging them by their hair into the cave. Also, it hasn’t hit these guys yet that the women are actually human beings. And this is a comic strip from the 50s.

But, yeah, by today’s standards – disturbing.

He’s either too shy to court a real woman or he is unable to find one. This is probably leading up to the introduction of the female characters. “What? Me Worried?” and “andhony” at least seem to be able to glean the joke from this strip.Come on, folks. It’s a comic strip!

I really hope you never have to watch a movie from the 1930s. I don’t think your heart will take it! It is a comic strip and Johnny was using the “caveman bashes women and carries to cave” trope. He is simply practicing his courtship ritual. Lighten up.

I think you are making a great deal of a fuss over nothing in yesterday’s strip; the most innocent option is undoubtedly the most correct one, especially in 1958 mainstream comics. Besides, the whole idea of a caveman conking a cavewoman over the head and dragging her off is all just fiction (probably has its origins in comics, come to think of it)..Today’s is perhaps a bit more disturbing, but I look at it in the light of beating on a stuffed animal when upset (or sticking pins in fake voodoo dolls). The toy/inanimate object doesn’t care, no people are injured, you get some relief, and as long as the subject of the anger/whatever isn’t there, not even a feeling has been hurt. Sorry, dude, no support here.

I stopped reading BC when it became all Christian-preachy, but I read it as a teenager in newspapers back in the sixties. As I recall, the second female character (yet to appear) was called simply “the fat broad.” I wonder how that’s going to play in the 21st century.
