If you don’t like the hillbilly dialect, you could thank your dear, departed St. Moore, who began the “southernization” of this strip. I agree he was a great artist and good writer, but I’ve never been a fan of that change..

Scancarelli is not a hack. His artwork is brilliant for a ‘toon. His stories, for the most part, are written as opportunities for one-liner jokes and puns, with a plot line to tie it together. That’s almost the definition of a comic strip. Take a good look at Dick Tracy. Now, THERE’S a hack.

Like I had told you before, I will help a homeless person, IF that person has truthfully tried to find work and can’t find not even a part time job.
My son right now, is working at a job through a temp agency. Where they offer no benefits, NOTHING. They sent him to a FULL TIME job, just to get there and find out that it is only a 20 hr a week job. He has only gotten temp jobs, right after he got laid off shortly before Bush left office. So yes, I’m helping him and if I see a homeless person asking for a cup of coffee, I will take them in to a coffee shop and buy them a cup of coffee.
But calling Jim Scancarelli a hack, is completely uncalled for. His art is fantastic, and most of his plots are great! Just because he gives them a hillbilly accent, or anyone that has a hillbilly accent does not make them poor or hoodlums.
Jim’s art is fantastic, isn’t it. JanCinVV said some of the most sensible things I’ve read here in awhile, and without getting political, I will agree with Hector that the constant insulting of Mr. Scancarelli in his own house is mean-spirited and simply inaccurate– and I also think it’s cowardly.
He’s a great cartoonist, coming up on 25 years as steward of the strip. King to Perry and Moore to Scancarelli… it’s still Gasoline Alley to me, and I’m happy to be able to read it every day. At the rate the world is changing, that is a privilege I’ll not take for granted. Jim still draws it in India ink on bristol board, and those of us lucky enough to have purchased his original artwork on the open market know that the art as drawn is even better than the art as printed.
The trolls will rant their repetitive rants and explain their “noble” reasons and motives for viciously denigrating and hurling libelous accusations at the man who labors lovingly over the strip. They’ll defend their abstract principles, or the past as they recall it (pre-1986, I suppose). They’ll protest the actions of cartoon characters toward other characters. They’ll high-mindedly weigh the political correctness of innocent humor, the hermeneutics of light escapist fiction. But all the while they see nothing rude (or pitiful) in insulting a fine cartoonist whose talent they can only envy, and whose hard work every day they probably can’t imagine. And without the soapbox that is placed here near this treasure of a comic strip, no one would hear their trollish voices at all.

No, oldschool51, I am sure that lots of us enjoy the comic.
However, I also enjoy the “wordy by play” of my fellow readers! It is somethimes boring and repetitive, but usually , very entertaining. I appreciate all of the different opinions.

I’m sorry to read of your trouble, Devonshade. My son just found a job after being laid off for about 9 months. I know it’s hard!
I work pt in an office position. I see the ones higher in status moving up, I have not. I also today as in the past have gone to job fairs, which have been a total waste of time as others before me have poured in some with out results. I only met one man who had a promise of a job. I left empty handed. And not enough money for a higher education.
