Hey, if Chuck’s going to cook for her (and I bet he can check the heat too!) I wouldn’t argue too much!

BL is a bit simpler, earthier, and somehow more realistic than Northern Exposure. BL has a lot more wry, glum acceptance that things can be pretty second-rate … but that it’s OK anyway. I love that Delores’ “NYC” T-shirt (which she wears because in this story arc she’s new in BL) is there, but doesn’t call attention to itself just to flog the point.

I too liked the show very much - my wife and I scheduled it into our lives every week, and we thought it was magical. I liked how it commanded respect for the offbeat, whether it be life styles or beliefs/superstitions or unexpectedly brilliant/wise people or whatever. Very healthy to question like that always. Perhaps a bit too much name-dropping, such as which year of Chateau Petrus was the rarest and most expensive Bordeaux ever, etc. I remember it being unafraid to be quietly spiritual, as with Native tradition or our hero’s Judaism on Yom Kippur.

I also loved the Mad Magazine spoof, “Snorin’ Exposure”, which I re-read recently even though it has yellowed a bit.

Only problem is when they had a baby on the show and named her Miranda, about a month after WE had a baby and named her Miranda (which was still a pretty unusual name then). Then they nicknamed her “Randi,” which I thought was icky, and I hoped it wouldn’t stick. Then a woman named Miranda won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress that same winter, and we were afraid the name would become the next Brittany or Jessica or Tiffany. But no, all we got was a Sex and the City role, and by then our kid was big enough to take care of herself …

I agree with you, Joe. Except, that BL fans should call her “Delores” not “Doris”!
