Only Rita could make such a statement and actually mean it. Especially given the fact that “The Empire Strikes Back” was far and away the best Star Wars movie.
Actually the Original was the best. I’ve never seen a movie audience cheer before when Luke blew the Death Star up. The others were just fluff to give us some background on what led up and what happened after. Seeing the Imperial Cruiser come on wide screen was a once in a life time event.
I can watch them, and enjoy them- to a point. I wince at a lot of stuff- especially some of the corny dialogue. Just inserting “I have a bad feeling about this,” or “I hate when he does that” every twenty minutes does NOT make for a sparkling script.
My feeling is that Lucas should have worked with (and trusted) collaborators who could have helped him hone his vision. THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK is considered the best film, and that’s very likely because it’s the one where he stepped back the furthest (that he was willing to) and let others direct and deliver a finished script. Lucas is not an effective solo act.
The first three movies have a lot action, but they also create a kind of self-made mysticism. The prequels have far too much about politics and economics- and almost every scene needs to be trimmed considerably.
Phantom Menace is under-appreciated. I admit, it’s not great. But when I watched it the second time, I really understood where Lucas was going with everything. (Jar-Jar not withstanding)
