Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson for October 07, 2015
Transcript:
Hobbes: Here's a nice leaf! Do you want it for your collection? Calvin: No. Hobbes: Why? Calvin: It's a beautiful afternoon! I'm not going to waste it doing ridiculous for school! Hobbes: But this would be one less leaf you'd need to collect later. Calvin: Yeah, but it's one more leaf than I need right now/ Hobbes: Somehow, it's always right now until it's later

It means, you’ll be out there the night before the assignment is due with a flashlight collecting leaves.

Hobbes, my friend, you have zeroed in on the disparity between subjective and objective time. In other words, while we live in our daydreams, time is still passing, and we will be rudely awakened if we don’t snap to.

i just used this on non sequitur…it always now…

I remember this one. No cartoon ever captured the difference between childhood and adulthood so well, in a way that leaves you liking both.

Sometimes we find ourselves suppressing what we want to do, because we have suffered the pain of not doing it. But Calvin is fresh and carefree – and enviable as such!

There was nothing in the assignment about getting either the common or scientific names. That comes in a much later course. He just had to collect leaves.

Aw, why don’t you just leaf him alone!

“There’s no time like the present!”“Make hay while the sun shines!”“Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today!”

It is a bad sign when your stuffed animal is smarter than you are.

This reminds me of my son when he was about Calvins age. One morning just before school, he said, “Oh, I need to take 10 or more different leaves to school today”
TODAY????

It means not having to carry a stupid leaf around the rest of the day.

I don’t get it. This sounds like such a fun assignment— if would be, at least, if it wasn’t for school.

There is also the small task of mounting and labeling them. Research to ascertain which tree they belong to, etc.My money says he shows up at school with a paper bag (This is pre-Walmart plastic, here!) full of leaves.

I know Bill wrote Calvin as a lazy 6 year old, but this instance is less lazy and more showing open contempt for any kind of responsibility at all.

Teenager expression in the last panel.

I am assuming now, as with snowflakes, no two are alike! Miss Wormwood said the leaves had to be a different kind, so how do we define “different kind”? Where is Perry Mason when you need him?
Job might be easier than originally thought…

Sooner or later the better.

I started to read a book once abut the invention of time, why our clocks have 12 hours, why our minutes have 60 seconds etc. As I recall Calvin completes his assignment with the help of some invading extra terrestrials, an off world leaf collection. It’s hilarious.

Thank the “snow demons” that there are aliens trying to colonize Earth that would fit very nicely in a Christmas stocking.

The older I get, the more I understand Calvin’s attitude.

Calvin’s motto: leaf for today.
