Sometimes we would press globs of industrial goo onto the tree tortillas to lift the funnies from them and stretch them. Then make them bounce around the room.
Back in the day I would take the newspaper from my dad’s chair (before he read it) and read the funnies & Dear Abby. Then I would put the newspaper EXACTLY the way it was back on his chair. He usually couldn’t even tell.
Nice throwback to Calvin & Hobbes! I really miss that strip! I guess he got out while he was ahead. In the words of a lawyer friend, “I practiced til I was perfect, then I quit!”
Question: does anyone know any statistics on whether or not fewer trees are being cut down, now that most newspapers have either ceased production, or are only in electronic format?
I have just spent twenty years of my life working for a newspaper. This paper (whom shall remain nameless…for now…) is still putting up a fight against the digital era that we live in now.And I have to say… This is by far the best definition of a newspaper I have ever read. For that, this strip has won today’s Dragoncat Award for Funniest Strip. That…and the Comics page is still the best part of any newspaper.
Those were the days, except that living in New York my parents read the Times, which never had comics. I had to wait until Monday when the neighbors put out the comics from the Daily Mirror and the Journal American — now both gone.
But, on Sunday morning there was a radio show where somebody read the comics. Don’t ask what radio was. Radio was sort of like television if you turn your back to the screen.
Lumber companies clear cut forest for lumber and the wood that can not use is sent to the pulp mills. Companies who ask you to go digital instead of receiving a paper statement are only interested in increasing profits not saving trees. The government requires that lumber replant trees in the clear cut areas, so they plant them with fast growing hybrids for the paper industry.

Nice to see Binkley has befriended Abby. His dear old dad must be very happy, inasmuch as Abby is a little GIRL.

Smugness is not funny. The revived Bloom County is rapidly losing appeal.

The comics are alive and well on our private little devices, and that’s good enough for me. Ain’t no future in the past.
