Frazz by Jef Mallett for November 08, 2015

Frazz: One of the key factors in running speed is foot contact. The less your feet touch the ground the faster you go. Then again is it the faster you go the less your feet touch the ground? Miss Plainwell: I think, therefore I am...a little easier to keep up with? Frazz: I'd feel manipulative, except you shouldn't be pushing it this soon after a marathon anyway.

What is he talking about? In running, you want one foot on the ground as much as possible. (if you’re not pushing, you’re slowing down)

I advise him to jump in the lake.

Mallet knows whereof he speaks. Less ground contact time with the resultant higher cadence means you’re moving forward faster. When your foot is in contact with the ground it is not moving forward!

By his reasoning, I must be flying when I am sitting in my recliner.

When I ran track in high school, I knew a kid who ran on the balls of his feet, his heels didn’t touch the ground. I tried it and it was impossible for me. I have no idea how he could do it.

speed increases with ground contact, unless you’re a plane

I sigh and wonder some days why Jef isn’t published as are other sports-oriented comics, (like TankMcNamara) published in the Sports pages of the local papers? A redundant question, I know… Smartass bicycle humor escapes most ‘local editors’ and there’s always the need to leave some space for a local chicken wing and beer establishment down in the corner of the page.
