Washington is in second place only because they are in the NL East. In the other two NL divisions they would be in third or fourth place, respectively.
That was exactly my point. As of today they trail Chicago by 13 games, and SF by three. If Washington were “moved” to the NL Central, they would have three other teams in front of them (and by a comfortable margin), meaning they would be in fourth place in that division (behind St. Louis, Pittsburgh, and Chicago). Ditto for the NL West (in third place behind LA and SF). Only in the slowpoke NL East can Washington claim to be “second”.
