I’m not a regular reader of Mallard Filmore, so I’m not the best to address this, however the character in today’s strip is wearing a hat with decor (almost looks like the wings of Mercury) and a high collar. Possibly an avain of the female persuasion?
Back in the early ’70’s, I’d sent a note to Ferd Johnson chiding Lord Plushbottom for smoking a cigarette in one of his dailies, for in all the years I’d followed the strip he’d never smoked and thought no more of it. Weeks later, I got a hand-drawn and colored panel of Plushbottom himself, apologizing for ‘the error of his ways’ and tossing aside a cigarette butt. Enclosed was a cheerful note from ol’ Ferd himself mentioning ‘that things get pretty durn busy around the office and things get missed in the rush of things.’ One of the many ‘toons and ’personal notes’ from artists that I’ll pass along to my favorite niece who has a penchant for such things.

I see Happy Hooligan, Abie the Agent, and Ignatz Mouse, but who’s the duck in green?

I wonder if this is like Gandalf going to the Grey Havens.

Why is modern day comic strip character Mallard Filmore attending Jeff’s (Mutt and Jeff) funeral as you can see in panel #2?

We wish Mallard Filmore were retired.

I suspect that since he works for a newspaper, Mallard Fillmore is there in the capacity of a reporter.
