The Emergency Alert System affects cable too. Both my sister and I are cord cutters, so one of the highlights of our Hawaiian vacation was, strangely, getting to watch cable TV. One time during Sponge Bob Square Pants, they interrupted the show with the EAS duck quacks. On the screen was blocky light grey text on a black screen announcing an EAS test. It’s nice to know they could warn us about a tsunami, but broadcast television would at least wait for a commercial break before running a test.

So many channels from which to choose in the desperate avoidance of real reality….
