I know that in most situations, the wait staff is not all that well paid, and tips are considered an important part of their overall earnings. For this reason, and particularly if the individual goes above and beyond in serving me, I tend to be a fairly generous tipper.
In the food service industry, tips are considered an integral part of the compensation package. Some are better at providing quality service and some are not. Those who are, will usually be rewarded better and rightly so.
If you work in an industry where wages or salary are the compensation, you should keep in mind that when you do very good work, you might be rewarded with a promotion and/or bonuses. Of course, just as with tips, there are no guarantees.
You make the choice and get whatever benefits you should and if you don’t, you can choose something else… usually!

There are exceptions, of course…
