    The switch to corn syrup in the US has far more to do with protectionism: The US has long had high import duties on sugar to protect sugar beet farmers. Corn syrup is simply cheaper.

    As for the health issues of HFCS, it’s not that it’s simply sugar but it’s how the body reacts to to fructose in particular. Remember that we evolved to handle a diet where our carbohydrate intake is mostly glucose based, (starch and maltose is 100% glucose, sucrose and lactose are 50%).
