Rover, hold still so I can put sunblock on your face. No, I hate that stuff. Fine, either you protect yourself from the sun's harmful rays, or we go inside to play.
“Coppertone”suntan lotion was the choice
back in the 60’s…essentially just a blend of
mineral oil, baby oil, and FD&C yellow….
probably 0 SPF rating…
People had some strange carrot colored skin
back then…
They had a nice billboard ad,(remember the little
girl with a dog trying to pull off the bottom of her
swimsuit?) cute….I think the actress Jodie Foster
did the TV ads back then…
AshburnStadium, not necessarily true – some of us went to doctors who paid attention to reality instead of fashion. My parents started using sunscreen lotions in the mid-’60s, and my brother and I have been using them all our lives.
BTW, the first sunscreen lotion was invented in 1938, and the first widespread use started in 1944, when American troops in the Pacific theater started to develop problems from long-term UV exposure. The SPF scale was developed in 1962.
The funny bit: I remember seeing a made-for-TV movie of “The Munsters” as a kid, where the family meets some distant relatives from Eastern Europe – and the mother tells her daughter (who looks like a normal person, not a B-movie undead horror) “Look at the nice, healthy pallor of her skin; you should talk to her, and get some tips.” Turns out she was right.

In the 60s we never believed we’d live to 80.

Yeah, and now the doctor’s are complaining that because we don’t have enough Vitamin D which is created by our bodies when we get sunlight.

Hey, doesn’t Rover look suspiciously like the dog in that Coopertone ad? I’ve never seen the two of them together in the same panel.
