Unless of course they’re female; or at any rate Paul certainly didn’t hold females to be very “equal”. Consider his ruling on widow’s assistance - don’t assist widows under 60, because they’ll just waste their time gossiping and giving in to their lusts, or on women’s silence at meetings - if they have anything to say they can say it to their husbands later at home. But then I always wondered about Paul, the way he hung around with the “young men” and his relationship to Timothy.

I’M not too bright but doesn’t man mean the human race. or a member of that race. Pluralizing it to men would not change this meaning in the least. For those who would argue it means specifically a male member of that race, I ask how did MAN survive without two genders. For you libber types caught in the 70s, watch out for “person. Per-for each, Son-male offspring. Now that’s sexist. JOE is right (Lewreader said that?) Not only now but for hundreds of years “Man” is inclusive of both genders. And as for men being equal, ask the descendants of Irish slaves sent here in chains cause they believed wine turned to blood.

Some people think they are more superior then others.

I’ve always felt I was superior to some people and inferior to a greater number of people.

A slight right turn here - I can’t read the last phrase without feeling it isn’t spelled correctly. All of the esses need to look like effs. It’s stylish.

I’ve come upon people that think they are better and I felt below their class so I leave them along. Especially the ones with high education and intelligence.

Sure Lewreader, try to confuse the matter………. you succeeded by the way. I was pretty sure when that was written that they actually had specific men in mind. As for man meaning everyone, I think that would go on a case by case basis.

Everyone is not equal, but whether someone is considered superior to other people depends on what standards are being used to judge by.

I don’t think we are all equal in the eyes of God either, at least not according to anything I have learned of. If we were, then wouldn’t we all end up the same after we died?

Kab, from what I have seen in your comments, you are a very caring and considerate individual, both good qualities according to many people. You have said that you are not well educated, but I doubt you are unintelligent.

Intelligence and education are only two ways to judge people, and don’t necessarily always go together. If someone is acting superior due to their education and or intelligence it is usually because they feel inferior in some other way.

I have never found two women who thought they were equal. Two men, yes, but two women: you gotta be kiddeing!

Not to turn this into a religious discussion, @sottwell, but in reading Paul’s letters, he’s quite supportive of women–disciples, funders, etc. He has a problem with idle people because it can lead to poor behavior, and in some instances the idle folks were women. :-)

RCMinor ~ I really don’t believe all people, men and women and whatever you want to discuss are born equal. Not totally up on the religious stuff, but I am pretty sure being born out of marriage automatically counted against a person. Also people are born with various medical difficulties, genetics, predispositions, etc. So:

All men (people) are not created equal and all men (people) are not equal. All men (people) are different and whether one is judged superior or inferior to others depends on the standards used to judge by.

LUVH8 I don’t know why the Creator did not make me equal to some in strength, artistic ability, intellect, or looks. I thank that Creator that he gave me better health, access to education, and moral training than many. i can assume he gave the same great gift equally to all, freedom of choice between good and bad.

(1 Samuel 16:7) “The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” We tend to judge people by financial status, skills (including social skills), education obtained (degrees & institutions) intelligence, looks, etc. The British judged people by their ancestors. God created us all as individuals with the ability to choose between right and wrong. What is in the heart matters most of all.

Soldierboy, I agree with you on that, but I’ve given up on shouting it at the brick wall that is most of my co-workers. In a newsroom, no less! Gah!

Joe-Allen, I think the Greek Orthodox would take exception to the idea that the Roman Catholic Church is part of their church history. They would consider us Romanists part of THEIR history. :) For that matter, I’m not sure you can include the RCC under the heading of “mainline.” That usually refers to Protestant denominations. You could include some strains of Baptist, however.

Man & men do not always mean males & females. So there! If I say that men do not typically give birth to babies, most people would know I am only speaking of male people.

During the time the Declaration Of Independence was written many women and men did not have the same rights as some of the men. The Declaration may now be considered to include all men (people) now, but it didn’t then.
