Ask Verla for ideas? Really? Not to step into MeGoNow’s territory, but…here goes.Moving the Ab Roller down to the Catacomb is a good idea. They won’t see it on top of the reefer when they go to get a snack to accompany their HoHos and it will provide a story for Crustwood in the future. In a couple of thousand years, an archeologist will discover the Ab Roller down there and will die of mysterious gases, sort of like Lord Carnarvon. Of course we know what the gases are but that future society won’t, so Crustwood’s perpetual “Deadlands” assignment will be reinforced.

The only rolls in the Penny household are rolls of blubber.

Rumpus room was the better description because all there is down there is fat rumps sitting in worn out chairs full of snack crumbs.

I haven’t heard of a finished basement referred to as a “rumpus room” since the 50’s! Game room, den, playroom, but not rumpus room.

I scorn such low hanging fruit as the thought of how Burl’s rumpus reacts to having his abdomen rolled. It’s a blessing that we will never know. .But there are larger scientific and philosophical questions to ponder. Consider the fact that every living entity today is the heritage of an immensely long line of ancestors, each of whom beat the odds by surviving to reproduce. The wily slime mold that managed to avoid the bottom feeders. The clever bottom feeding proto fish that escaped the jaws of deadly sea creatures. The agile early mammal that managed to scurry amidst dinosaurs until the meteor made some slight alterations. The lemur-like thing that was enough faster than the next slower lemur-like thing to avoid being eaten by an early feline. All the way up through leaping forest primates, shambling australopithicus, and lucky Neanderthals. .All that. All those magnificent survivors, in an unbroken line that leads, in the end, to Burl, Joy, Marlene, Dale, Verla and Jerry. (Although Jerry may not actually be quite on the same branch of the evolutionary tree.) This is it? This is the goal of evolution? Or has Crustwood’s hazardous waste laden environment made it a black hole of devolution, a glimpse of the future of mankind? Paging Dr. Darwin. Your patient is dead..It also does away with any notion of intelligent design, since any intelligence that could cook up the Penny’s is operating at about the intellectual level of Zippy the Pinhead.
