This is a strip from years ago and I believe Dan bases ideas for his strip from personal life experiences, so there might have really been a Jim customer type who passed on.
It’s an old belief that speaking ill of the dead would cause the dead person’s spirit to haunt the speaker. The better course is not to speak ill of another person, thereby avoiding darkening one’s own spirit energy. I know that but have to admit I’ve done it anyway and suffered the expected result. I’ve met a few “Jims”, people who are always rude and unpleasant to others, who live alone and complain because no one wants to be around them. The objective is to avoid being a Jim in the first place, at least enough that you can have a few people who are glad to see you.
Wait. This is a flashback story line. Jim can’t be dead, because I could have sworn we’ve seen him from before the flashback, which is in the future/present.
