Norman: Hey, dad... Ralph: Hay is for horses! My second-grade teacher, Mrs. Heinlein, always said that whenever someone said "hey." I've never forgotten it! Thank you, Mrs. Heinlein!
A nice tribute to one of the great SciFi authors of all time.
“Hay is for horses, better for cows. Oats are for goats, and a chair’s for sitting on.”
I always heard (and said) it as “hay is for horses and (another word for) donkeys, you want some!”

A D.I. used to say, “Hay is the first stage of horses***.”
Was this an homage to the great author Robert Heinlein?

I always heard it, “Hay’s for horses, straws cheaper, grass is free.”
