JJ: You know, Mike, finishing my suite puts me at something of a career crossroads. On the one hand, I could stay put, preserving my regional authenticity... on the other hand, I could swerve into the SoHo fast lane, cultivate a glitzy gallery rep, and sell my paintings for $40,000 a pop. Mike: Oh, what the heck. Take the second approach. JJ: You won't mind being Mr. JJ Caucus?

I know a few artists who have some confidence in the value of their work, but none have this much confidence…

And it’ll only cost MIke $100,000 to get her established, or a grant from the government, or they could make those 1%ers pay their fair share to get her living the life she wants to be accustomed to.

She reminds me of the art majors I used to know when I was taking ceramics classes at my uni.Every year, they’d have a student/teacher art sale, and you could tell who did which just by the price. The teachers, who were experienced, established artists (at least one with a national reputation), had nice pieces with low prices. The students, otoh, wildly overrated their pieces. I especially remember one, crayon scribbles on a piece of paper, with an $80 price tag. I can only hope it was ironic.

$80 for a crayon scribble by students pales in comparison with “modern” art pieces of nothing but a few colored streaks of paint going for many thousands of dollars painted by …….. wait for it……… elephants!

At one time I had enough canvass to drape a good sized living room, used it for several years working as a painter/decorator. In the end, they were spattered with every color I had used over the years. Realized too late I should have framed them and sold them as a set “Life’s Work” - and retired on the spot. Or bought another set and started over!

I believe Picasso made money selling blank canvases with his signature at one point….
