you NEVER put the good chef knife in the dishwasher. between the heat of the dishwasher and the harshness of the abrasive chemicals in the detergents it will ruin a really good kitchen knife. Arlo’s right…….

Dishwashers ruin the wood handles, doesn’t hurt the blades much.

What did she do with the knife to cause her to put it in the dishwasher? That maybe, is the bad news……

Janice must be one of these people who have to wash the dishes by hand before they put them in the dishwasher or Arlo would have noticed that the plates were dirty.

We have one of those clean/dirty magnets that you flip. But half the time we forget to turn it.

If well separated from the stainless, you can put your sterling in the dishwasher. I do agree about not putting the knives in there, but only because, even if you put them blade down, water will loosen the handles.

My best knives are ceramic with plastic handles. Impervious to water, but I’m very careful with the knife edges.

juniebUse the locking lever as the indicator: unlocked = dirty, locked = just run. You have to unlock to empty; if you need a freshly washed item and don’t have time to empty it, take the item you need and lock it back. No memory exercise needed.

Since I have neither a dishwasher nor a good chef knife – not a problem

Don’t let good knives come into direct contact with other “things”, it will ruin their edge. We don’t have any good knives for that reason. I want a kitchen that doesn’t have to be treated with kid gloves. (And I was never a good cook, so it didn’t matter…my hubby cooks now, and he has a ceramic knife in a holder).

When Janis is in one of her standoffish moods the dishes aren’t the only thing that Arlo is doing by hand. LOL

I got my spouse to stop putting my good cutting knives in the dishwasher. I hand washed them and put them away after I finished using them. It was easier doing that then having him stop running the dishwasher because he didn’t like being nagged about what to put in and what not to put in.

I have a set of Japanese kitchen knives made from 440C Gold 3 Stainless steel that is over 40 years old and still in Excellent condition. They have Never been in a dishwasher and, on the few occasions when a guest to my house has left them to soak in the sink, I have rescued them as soon as I knew..They hold an excellent edge and I keep them Sharp using my Grandfather’s old Straight Razor Hone.
