I have a stong and passionate interest in Astonomy and Space Exploration, I think we need to and should do more, but I again - Like it or not - have to point out the truth is that Bush cut NASA’s budget 8 years in a row, cut funding for the Space Shuttle replacement, and did nothing about funding for going back to the Moon or on to other planets except talk.

It took an uprising in the scientific community to get funding for the repair and update of the Hubble telescope.

You may disagree with Obama’s decisions on Space, but some things have to be put off in order to pay to get us out of this recession.

I was involved when Bush made all of those NASA cuts and I don’t remember any hue and cry about how it was going to hurt America, all I remember was a lot of silence – sort of like the deep silence of space.

Sorry Machado. It was Nixon in 1974 that dropped the speed limit to 55. Actually, he wanted it dropped to 50 but the tractor w/trailors would be allowed to drive 55 “as it was more fuel efficient” according to Nixon’s TV speech to America. The outcry was overwhelming so he set it at 55 for everyone. So, no birds of a feather there. Today neither Nixon or Reagan would get elected as they actually cooperated with Democrats to get things done for the country.

Republicans hate him when he spends money on the American people. Republicans hate him when he saves money on the military. Republicans hate the American people. But they love fireworks and blowing stuff up so they’re not all bad.

“never said he signed it, Carter was a big promoter even though the public hated the law. ”

One can ‘promote’ all one wants… if Nixon was who signed it, then the one who ”slowed down the country” was Nixon, not Carter.

“Fix the budget but my own district’s programs are sacred.” ^ Mantra for both sides.

No US Prez until Obama took NA-SPACE-A completely OUT OF SPACE.

To turn a SPACE agency into a “rescue the self-esteem” agency for one selected religious group on earth, must take a presidential heart that beats FIRST for Islam.

NASA head Charles Bolden…”Obama charged me with 3 things….” (1.inspire children into science and math; 2.EXPAND INTERNATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS; and 3rd=find a way to reach out to the Muslim world…..to help them FEEL GOOD ABOUT THEIR HISTORIC CONTRIBUTION to science, math and engineering.”

This should be prosecuted for presidential MAL-PRACTICE, imo.

In debt up to the grandkids’ ears….our government should not spend one dollar of NASA’s budget for anything that is not for furthering the US SPACE PROGRAM.

much of the claimed credit to Muslims for advances is credit given to them for taking the ideas and inventions of others and using them, when they were Conguerors by the Sword of the Islamic expansion….stopped only when they tried to take the totality of Europe.

Modern Islamics, especially the Taliban-types, are anti-progress and anti-advance, condemning the entire Western Civilized World for its accomplishments.

We were put here as witnesses to the miracle of life. We see the stars, and we want them. We are beholden to give back to the universe…. If we make landfall on another star system, we become immortal.

disgustedtaxpayer, would you mind posting a link for that? Because, frankly, I find that quote hard to believe. I’m not happy with the slowdown of NASA, though a number of scientists have said for decades that we would get more bang for our buck with unmanned craft; I think our future as a species is in space, and the US needs to get out there. Because otherwise someone else will be there first…

Now everyone knows we won’t found a moon colony. Don’t we have better things to do with that money?

DisgustedTaxPayer, you have quite a selectionist view of history. While you’re prattling on about expansion and “Conguerors [sic] by the Sword of Islam” I think you must fail to remember that some of the bloodiest expansion in the name of a religion was that made by the Christians. The Christian Jihad, also known as the Crusades.

NIxon cut the speed limit, most vehicles designed to cruise at 65-70 mph on freeways- started getting WORSE gas mileage, as aerodynamics improved and some started losing weight. CHP reported a drastic INCREASE in fatal single-car accidents on I-5 as more people were falling asleep at lower speeds and longer drive times. My personal car- Lotus- dropped 30% on mileage at 55.

Bush did cut various NASA programs, primarily manned flight. Yes, a lot of people say robots are better, but last week’s resupply glitch proved they can’t compensate like a human pilot.

Our defense is likewise being put at risk with all the marbles being put on drones to do our fighting. The F-35 has increased budgets tremendously, and it hasn’t had anything to do with a pilot on board, it’s just a piece of junk. For our current “wars” the close support A-10 is probably the most valuable aircraft, and being pulled.(not “sexy enough’- just efficient and accurate.)

Too many hope our future is in space, because they’re too busy destroying this planet to look at more ways to cut back on the pace of destruction.

Hint: we cannot move into space anywhere near fast enough to save the species from itself.

“The Christian Jihad, also known as the Crusades.”

Now, that is a grotesque revisionism of history!

Any idea what precipitated the Crusades?

    taxpayer is absolutely correct:

The PC culture has magically credited Muslims in general and Arabs in particular with great advances of human civilization, which is indicative of the fact that history is written by victors.

Visiting Mesopotamia, Egypt, Turkey and the likes, formerly non-Arab, non-Muslim places is most instructive about the true history of our civilization …though one has to do some searching, for much of the real history has been lovingly obliterated by the Muslim victors.

Any body remembers the Taleban blowing up centuries old Buddha statues carved into the hills in Afghanistan?

    Our numbers are arab.

Why do you think we don’t write in roman numerals anymore?

The arabs didn’t impose it on us. Charlemagne did.

    “Our numbers are arab.”

When and where did they get it?

Was it before or after they burned the greatest depositary of knowledge of the day - Alexandria In 627 AD?

Use of numbers is documented from about 35,000 BC …

    Disgusting and Peterg

While the European religious power elite were busy throwing a mild cultural tantrum, otherwise known as the Dark Ages (even in European history books), burning witches, books, and heretics for about 400 years, heathen Arabian and Indian scholars preserved books of histories, sciences and mathematics. It’s not PC revisionism. It’s fact. All of the written knowledge may not have originated in India and Arabia, but it was certainly preserved there.

At the end of the Dark Ages in Europe, there were very few books left in Europe to restart libraries and universities. Guess where they came from. The Middle East. You can rant and deny it as much as you want, but it won’t change the truth.

By the way, do you know what jihad is? It’s a religous war against those your side deems to be heretics. Sounds like a pretty good description of the Crusades to me.

It was the Inquisition and reformation that brought real brutality to Europe. Algebra came from Arab cultures.

Bruce- intelligence certainly wasn’t wasted on psychotic “Christian fundamentalists”, “Muslim fundamentalists”, “Zionist fundamentalists”, or right-wing extremists. Bigots were all hiding behind the door when they passed out the “trains”, and they weren’t listening.

And WHAT THE HECK HAS THIS TO DO WITH NASA??

    “female genital mutilation…”

As opposed to male genital mutilation [read: circumcision]? As horrific as one’s religious practices may seem (and it is horrible), it’s not as though we don’t do some of the same things.

Petergrt; they were imposed by emperor Charlemagne throughout his empire along with the metric system around 800 BC.

Excision is an abomination. But it was already there before Islam. They have found egyptian mummies with traces of that.

    http://www.algebra.com/algebra/about/history/

While the ‘dark ages’ in Western Europe were indeed dark, they were nowhere near as dark as the Arab occupation of Spain is being described as ‘bright’.

To find a moral equivalence between a male and female circumcision is beyond depravity!!!

The super-educated and progressive Muslims / Arabs can’t even build a bicycle, though they are leapfrogging to nuclear weaponry - invented, no doubt thanks to Arab saviors of world knowledge …
