I don’t know if this is accurate or not, but in movies it always seems the X’s begin the play, hence Offense would be X’s, Defense would be O’s. I might look that up later when I have more time, and sleep.
“BC” had a football announcing arc years ago that was always one of my favorites. BC announcing the play was very basic indeed: “He takes the ball and runs like mad—and another guy knocks him down!”
