It actually is pretty rare in the wild. It’s just common in captivity, where the male can’t get away as easy.

@Bobarion, my thought exactly. The only two things you can’t evade forever.
I had a grd level entomology class a few years ago, the prof told us that male Mantids don’t usually “complete their task of copulating” if his head is still attached, so female mantids know to eat the heads of their mates.
Talking without a head is as weird as it gets.
