Jeff: Hey, was that you who just drove by me in a gray honda accord?
Goat: Yeah. But I slowed down and gave you the right of way.
Jeff: You didn't bow.
Goat: Cyclists are fascists in tight pants.
Must be Politically Incorrect week on PBS..Oh, wait! Every week is Politically Incorrect week on PBS..But Pastis does seem to be aiming for above and beyond…
I wish drivers would stop giving me “extra” consideration. Do not yield to me if you have the right of way. (You are disrupting the “flow” of traffic, causing confusion, and now I’m in the wrong gear for the situation.) Don’t slow down to pass me. (It then takes longer for you to get around me, and I may need to turn left.) Or, worse yet, drop in behind me and cruise slowly. (Backing up traffic and getting the people behind you peeved at me.) If you are stopped at an intersection and it’s your turn to go, and I’m approaching, do not sit there waiting to see what I’m going to do. (You are messing up the timing of my approach and, once again, generally screwing up the “flow”. Not to mention that I’m now in the wrong gear… again.)
Want to show consideration? How about stopping behind me at the light, instead of beside me. Give me my place in the lane.
@F6F5Hellcat — Cyclist think they are cars when they want to be and pedestrians when they want to be. Red lights, for example, do not really mean “stop” to them, they mean, “Cross with the pedestrians.” Riding up in non-lanes between rows of cars stopped at a light is A-OK for them, as is hopping up onto the sidewalk if it helps them get ahead.
The problem that I have with cyclists is the inconsistency. I don’t know what y’all are going to do from one moment to the next. I will admit, I’d rather deal with cyclists rather than the Boston joggers.
Would like to see Cyclists start paying to use the highways as most vehicle owners do…….Gas tax, inspection registration, insurance, ect,ect ……at least I’m my state highway use is free, you want to play you should help pay.
I’m a cyclist with no car for most of my adult life who has driven in jobs more miles than most people will ever drive. I’ve always wondered how so many drivers and cyclists (say about 85-90%) can see where they’re going with their heads up their butts. Most are poor drivers or poor cyclists. It only takes a little thought but apparently most people can’t be bothered.
When bicycles are required to have licence tags and pay their fair tax for using the roads I will have better feelings for them. It would also help give a way to report all their traffic law violations, and registering the VIN numbers would help track down stolen bikes.
I always give them plenty of room, but I was really annoyed recently when I encountered several groups riding uphill on a very narrow windy mountain road, two abreast. Several cars were making unsafe passes over the double yellow on blind corners, asking for a head on. Single file PLEASE!!
Bicclists in drag like that are the rudest, stupidest people on the road. They ride 2-3 abreast on mountain roads (6-8% grade, used by trucks, RV’s, cars) and think they own the place. I flip them off, and they look all “whattttt…..?”. I LOVE it when the CHP writes them up for obstructing traffic! GO BRIAN!"
Please check your state laws. I believe most if not all states have the same road rules/laws for bicyclists as for cars. Both drivers and cyclists would do well to know your local laws and abide by them please.
I was on a city bus once, the bus was stopped at a red light, waiting to make a right turn when a driver came up alongside it, using the bike lane as a driving lane in order to get past the bus and make the turn first (that or the driver thought the bus was going straight). The bus driver wasn’t aware of the car coming up alongside her and went to make the turn – crunch. sometimes the drivers are worse than the cyclists.
You obviously have never ridden a bicycle and interacted with any motorist. I’ll be sure to share this humor with my deceased friend, who suffered the ultimate penalty at the hands of a distracted motorist. My bad, the driver was too busy bowing.
I’m glad to see that at least one person got the gist of my comment. The strip was about Goat being considerate (yet still not pleasing the cycling psycho). That put me in mind of all the well-meaning, but clueless drivers that plague me. But then the typical commenter immediately goes into the simple minded “us vs them” mode, with everyone squarely in one camp or the other. Oh, that life were so simple.
Motorists can criticize cyclists because motorists ALWAYS obey all traffic laws. They never exceed the speed limit, never drive distracted, never drink and drive, always properly licensed and cars registered, never run red lights, and no one is killed or injured by careless motorists. Ever.

I think Rat would have been a better fit for this strip instead of Goat, especially the last line.

I always acknowledge drivers who stop to let me cross the road which has no traffic lights.
Not all motorists are rude and arrogant.
