As for Consumer Reports, they have their favorites. It was obvious when the 2002 Pontiac Vibe was panned horribly while the Toyota Matrix was a highly reliable “best buy”. They were made in the same joint-venture plant with common mechanical parts.
Burl, it’s because they test everything thoroughly and don’t play favorites. I believe they pay for the products they test so they don’t have to please manufacturers.
Consumer Reports has a habit of testing very expensive things – not the ones you’d buy at WalMart or Sears or other regular stores. Like $400 coffee makers, imported washing machines, $350 hot air fryers (our cost $40), $65,000 SUV’s with turbo engines, I think it’s so the staff can buy deluxe stuff cheap after the testing.
I have tools that I paid good money for, and other than losing some of them over the years, the ones I still have are still in perfect working order. I think of that every time I use them.

That salad spinner resembles a bedpan. I might not have noticed it had I not been looking for the toilet, which is really easy to find.
