This is the 3rd time that this strip (and also the last half dozen) has been broadcast (in 2007 and 2011). There are 30 years of Calvin & Hobbes strips – why must we get these repeats?
I remember a teacher paddling a kid…only once, in NY in 1963. And not really paddling. Using her hand and only a few swats. And this was first grade. Never saw that again, thank God. Mostly “bad” students had to stand in the corner for about 10 minutes. Humiliating enough. Didn’t know what I’m reading above about the “deep south”. Wow.
I went to school in a civilized small city in upstate NY. Corporal punishment was banned here in 1960, just in time for me. I imagine some of my teachers might have yearned to swat me.
My mother paddled my brother and me with a carpet beater and a cooking spoon! When we grew up, we hung up both on the wall in our cellar for remembrance!!
I’m 55. I got a paddling in first grade. It was a wooden paddle. I blew up my sandwich baggie and popped it. It was so loud that the entire cafeteria got quiet. I will never forget that day!
“A pity they let the old punishments die. Was a time detention would find you hanging by your thumbs in the dungeons. God, I miss the screaming.” — Hogwarts Caretaker Argus Filch
Girls were “delicate”, and required parental permission to have their heinies swatted. It was worried that it might damage their reproductive parts. I always thought that was bull, especially after I figured out their’s were inside! Our’s were more exposed!
After hitting the submit button and posting my remark, I must say that I contemplated the possible responses of the overly sensitive. Apparently, it didn’t take long, and I thought long on a sufficient rejoinder, but believe me, I don’t need you pointing out the shortcomings and boorish behavior of a junior high kid 40-something years removed. Plus, I really didn’t want to take that tizzy of yours and push it into a veritable snit. However, just looking through your posts on this one comic during a single day, it seems that almost everything pushes you over the edge. See red much, do you? Perhaps a deep breath and counting to 10 will help you get through such episodes. It always seems to work well in those over-reactive hypersensitive moments.

How old is this strip – surely they don’t use corporal punishment in US schools still?

Did schools still spank kids in 1986?

Probably the only time Calvin got sent to the principals office that he was not the cause of the problem.

Even though it had stopped at my elementary when I was there, the principal kept the old paddle on his wall.

I’m a southerner as well, but I don’t think you and I attended the same School of Capitalization.

What does this have to do with a comic strip. Please leave off the political comments.

My main question here is why Calvin got sent to the office. Susie was the one passing notes. I don’t think Calvin did anything wrong.

I had a woodshop teacher that made us make our own paddles. He then inspected them on our tender young rear ends. Ah, the good old days.

In 86 I’m sure they still used it, now kids get a gold star if they do it wrong.
dottylu almost 9 years ago
Yep. I taught at a high school in Florida where the kids got “paddled”. Pretty pathetic.
