There is supposedly an official Soviet journal that records that Gagarin’s spacecraft hit something. I read the story in the Hartford Courant years ago, but now I can’t find any record of it.
As with every year (see here, for example), a very nice comparison with what science learned and accomplished is what religion learned and accomplished—namely, nothing.
