Planned obsolescence. I mean I think that CD’s and DVD’s are going the way of 8 tracks.

We recently bought a new DVD player after the old one died. It was only after we got it home and could read the instructions that we found out it doesn’t record off the air, by antenna. You need cable/satellite for that. Aaarrrggh!

I purchased a DVD player/recorder that only needed one cable like my present one to hook up to my TV. Right! I can’t hook it up as it has more than one cable. Learned my lesson about buying off the computere.

I can’t say I totally disagree with what you have to say, but the primary reason for a roof top or other type antenna is to cut the connection to cable. We did it a couple of years ago, and don’t miss it at all. We have four HD TVs in our home, including the 60" unit in our TV/Video room, and all of them receive great signals from one antenna mounted above the garage ceiling.

In addition, we have close to 1,000 DVDs and Blue Ray discs with top rated films dating back to the early 1920s including Metropolis! It’s unlikely we will be devoid of entertainment in the near future.

Unfortunately, the ability of folks to receive “free” (remember there is really no such thing as free) over the air broadcasts using a local antenna may disappear in the near future as stations auction off their bandwidth so more idiots who think they need their smart phones can watch more crap on their hand held POS devices!

    Okay, I unloaded a bit… sorry!
