Good Thing Wally, by JennerTo the tune of “Good King Wenceslas”Good thing once he’s busted outWally he’s not leavin’.‘Stead he waited roundabout,Else they’d now be grievin’.Brightly shine the city lights –Kirbee gets to view ‘emFrom a window ledge and notPlunging to her doo-oom.
Krupp? And what Tardis? It is just an underground city with an invisible door in the freighter ship that is inserted halfway into the ground on the surface of the desert.Same as Unity colony was an underground city.
This is apparently some alternative reality in which World War III never happened, and things were able to progress into the future. I have heard that the Lucraneans have the ability to travel between realities so why not? An interesting possibility is that this is a Lucranean city in our reality. That would explain how the Opabinia Queen’s Captain was able to leave the ship after Aaron Marx won it in a card game. A third possibility is that this is a Topsider city that produces the drones, hordes of transporters and airships that our little band has seen.An interesting question that just came to mind is how the Lucraneans dealt with the mutagen. My understanding is that they are human and technically as susceptible to the plague as anybody else. Did they all mutate and deal with it? Did they have some fore warning and use barrier technology? Did they have a cure? I’d love to see me some answers.
Don’t know if it’s necessarily Lucranean. Remember the odd writing (if that’s indeed what it was) on the books etc onboard the Opabina Queen. The few signs visible appear to use a more familiar alphabet. Still, too soon to tell… ;-)
That sure rings true. The strong have always preyed on the unwary and the desperate, the weak act.And that is in our real world, so not surprising if these are the evil in whatever dimension they are in, doing what all evil tries to do.
I remember reading the Lensman and Foundation series back in the sixties and early seventies. While I found the obvious good/bad scenario in the Lensman series, I thought the Foundation series was to shorten the time between the fall of the first interstellar civilization and the second one. It would have been like a conscious attempt to minimize the time between the fall of the Roman Empire and the Renaissance.
As far as being multilayered. This story certainly is that. I do hope that Aaron has a planned end result of the story (mutants win because they have adapted if for no other reason).
On the left side there’s a Krupp sign and on the right one starting with “OD”. Odeon? But Krupp is famous for being a German munitions factory. Makes me wonder just what this new society is.
I don’t see this as being the Duchess’ Endtown. I’ve looked back at the end of Flask’s story arc and it shows her building something that looks very much like our Endtown, a cavern with small foundations and canals running through the city. http://www.gocomics.com/endtown/2012/10/16http://www.gocomics.com/endtown/2012/10/17http://www.gocomics.com/endtown/2012/10/17Flask’s Endtown seemed to have a similar scale to the traditional one, it was a large town with mostly small buildings. I don’t even think the clock tower was over 10 stories tall. The building I saw in the 4th panel appears to be at least 25 stories tall and it seems to be vast enough that it is feasible to operate aircraft around it. I couldn’t even imagine operating a gyrocopter in Endtown. If this is what the Duchess’ underground city has become, Philomena or someone else was REALLY busy.
I doubt Holly fell. She wasn’t running and her reflexes are extremely fast. Like Wally, she most likely would have stopped, then turned one way or the other and continued on her way.Is climbing an option? In her state of mind, she might be just above them quietly watching what is going on.
We can see the reflection of Chick’s hair in the window. Impressive attention to detail. Why is someone luring desert travelers to this city? If it’s a trap, then probably no one is intended to leave. With the portal leading to the ledge of a building, it looks like either a death trap or a test or both. It could be to kill Topsiders, who would be too encumbered by their suits to avoid going over the ledge, and allow unencumbered people to save themselves.
One thing that bothers me about panel 3 is that Wally seems to have caught Kirbee at or slightly below her center of gravity. I keep expecting her to pivot over the top of Wally’s arms and fall to her and Chic’s doom. Am I missing something?
What a staggering change of pace and scenery for the story! Note what this must have said, by implication, about the characters. Wally is a practical, planning, diligent and responsible person. Neither he nor Holly plummeted to their deaths. presumably he couldn’t turn around and go back to tell Kirbee what he’s found, otherwise he would. So he patiently stood and waited, not knowing whether it would be a minute, ten or sixty. And he would only have a split second to react. And he would have to be careful not to be pulled over the edge with her. And by further implication, he had to choose whether to spend that time waiting for Kirbee or being with his suicidal girlfriend sitting on a window ledge. And said girlfriend would be well aware which choice he thought was more important. A whole world of dynamics are going on in the background.
