Recap of a late post from last night:… does it bother anybody about the return of the Apparatus? Didn’t the Blackhearts pretty much rub them out? Now that the Blackhearts are gone, the Apparatus is back?
There’s a big difference between “pretty much” and “completely.”
As shown below, Méliès stated in October of 2014 that the Blackhearts controlled “all organized crime” but he did say that two Apparatus members remained, operating “small endeavors.”
When Mr. Bigg/Mr. Bribery returned (March 28, 2015), he congratulated Venus for “tak[ing] control of almost all the crime in this city” (emphasis mine). Later in the same speech (in the March 30 strip) he mentioned that BB-Eyes had “helped wipe out the local Apparatus.” It could be that he only meant that BB-Eyes assisted in the effort to wipe them out even if the task was still only 99% complete. Also, note that it was the local branch that was almost wiped out, not the entire world-wide “Mob.” If the Outfit in the city ever did get wiped out, there might be people who could move in from different jurisdictions.
Does anyone recognize the woman behind Tracy in panel 3? She could be a known character from somewhere , presumably some kind of detective.
The detectives we saw a few weeks ago gathering for the conference last got together in 1988 when Tracy organized an international summit of detectives in the Caribbean to combat terrorism. Wendy Wichel at the time questioned whether is was really an “assault” on terrorists, predating the familiar “war on terror” phrase we’ve come to know by more than a dozen years. That conference was called “S.T.O.P.” — Shared Terrorist Operations Procedure.
Tracy got kidnapped by people who were trying to put a stop to S.T.O.P. More on that later.
“STILL” at that conference in NYC Sam?!?! Are you SURE about that? because on January 9th he was sitting beside you in Diet Smith’s office talking about the stolen goggles.
I swear, this story I jumping more than an epileptic Mexican jumping bean!
Tracy meets Wunbrow (again, unless one deliberately dismisses Sundays) at the big detectives convention; and back at the MCU Ms. Steffihawk, ace receptionist, has forgotten about it? Good thing Sam is around to answer the phones….
Clayton “Bud” Collyer (note the spelling) born Clayton Heermance, was also the host of first the radio and then the TV version of “Beat The Clock” as well as “To Tell The Truth”. He played Clark Kent/Superman in the Filmation series “The New Adventures of Superman” which ran from 1966-1970. In the first season he worked opposite Joan Alexander (as Lois Lane) who had played Lois Lane in the radio series and Jackson Beck who was the narrator in both. Collyer died in 1969 at the age of 61.
Thanks to AnyFace who corrected me that the girl was Black Piranha; it was the guy who was Cinnamon Knight..Or something like that..But I find it odd that I, an occasional visitor to these pages these days, was the first one who spotted her in the Sunday panels..This is definitely a different Dick Tracy than most of us have grown up with. It’s hard to criticize, though, considering that the previous versions of Dick Tracy likely would not have survived today..Still, this present story in particular, seems a roll back to 1960s Batman. Now, in that day, still a kid, I found that Batman highly entertaining. Today, I can see how others would (and have) criticize 1960s Batman as silly..I think that is the tightrope Mike and Joe are walking right now. Entertaining, no question! Silly? Time will tell.

Bud Collier was the voice of Clark Kent/Superman in these and later in the 1960’s version not H-B. Bud Collier was also host to “To Tell The Truth” too.____________________
There’s an episode of THE HONEYMOONERS where Bud Collyer appears in his capacity as hist of BEAT THE CLOCK, but I couldn’t locate a clip of it, So you’ll have to settle for this network promo.
Have you ever seen the film, “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow” by any chance? The attack on New York was influenced and was shout out to Fleischer Superman Cartoons: “The Mechanical Monsters”.____________________
Yes~!!
As promotion at Comic-Con that year, several giant inflatable robots loomed over the streets of San Diego.
The missing 4th panel depicts a plane, viewed from below at an upward slant, flying to that conference with a caption to indicate such.(I saw it in Joe’s wastebasket) (Don’t ask me how I got in there, that’s my secret)____________________
I want your description of all the missing fourth panels now! :)
A quick note about the early Fleischer “Popeye” cartoons …
The “Sailor Man” was originally voiced by a real sailor, William Costello, though Costello was soon replaced by Fleischer animator Jack Mercer, who would add Popeye’s many mumbling asides.
[ In the early days, at least at Fleischer Studios, the voice track was added after the animation was completed. ]
In a sense, Jack Mercer was “riffing” even before riffing became a thing.

I believe this is Ms. Steffihawk’s first appearance in a daily strip other than as a disembodied voice. She first appeared on November 1 in a Sunday.
