Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson for January 07, 2016
Transcript:
Phoebe: Does this happen to you a lot? Max: Kind of. Phoebe: But your life seems so much easier than mine! Max: Nobody stuffs you in trash cans or hits you for being bad at sports. Phoebe: Last week, Dakota started a rumor that I like to eat boogers on celery. Marigold: Children, children! You can both be miserable.

It’s not a Sum-Zero world. It’s not one or the other. Both your lives can suck at the same time.

I think Marigold isn’t helping. No one wants to be miserable.

And just what’s WRONG with boogers on celery?

This is right on the money! My husband and I have often compared our experiences as nonconforming kids — for girls, the retribution is social, whereas for boys it’s physical. I always found the social stuff to be more insidious and long-lasting, but then again I never got slammed into any lockers, so I can’t really say which is worse.
It’s good that Phoebe and Max have each other (and Marigold).

I sure wouldn’t bully someone that had a unicorn for a bodyguard.

No wonder he always wears black.. Hides stains better. But then, a bright flower print always works best.
