    I can recognize the sound of my mail carrier’s van. The engine makes a low putt-putt sound. It’s unmistakable.

    Government tires: during the drought and during California’s fire season, some idiot flipped a cigarette butt out his window in a left-turn lane at the light and it ignited the dried leaf debris that had collected against the curb. I was two cars back and calling 911 while the little post office delivery truck in front of me saw it too and ran over the small fire back and forth again and again to smother it. Did it, too—when the firemen arrived there were only scorched bits and marks left. That fire could have gone huge fast following that curb line and beyond and that postman saved the taxpayers a potential bundle even if he wrecked a tire, which I’m not sure he did, given that he was able to drive off.
