I don’t think there’s anything stupider than hating an inane Comment but reading it anyway, and then complaining loudly about how irritated one is as a result (and maybe publicly needling or ridiculing its disabled author in revenge).
I like the way Garry Trudeau handled his brain-injured character all last year, when he’d say absent or pointless stuff. Trudeau ended up getting a lot of well-deserved props for showing America how much respect and forbearance its disabled vets deserve. I don’t hold it against Joe that his TBI was sustained postwar.
Depending on which strip’s comments you read, about two weeks ago JAD deleted all his posts and left in a huff after a few people’s particularly merciless comments about his brain, or, GoComics cancelled JAD’s account because Joe said mean things about a few people who’ve been mercilessly tweaking him.
Depending on which strip’s comments you read, a majority of other commenter more or less miss him, or, not many people care but most of those are relieved he’s gone.
Well, yeah, he was kinda cranky at times, but some of the abuse I saw him get months ago was entirely over the top, both here and on Usenet, and I posted as much at the time. He was more or less harmless, and funny at times. Short of the outright potty-mouth abusers or spammers, I’m sorry to see anyone get chased away. Comic strips need all the friends they can get.
