I went to high school with a guy like Nate. Big enough to throw a man through a brick wall, but nice as a person could be, except when it came to bullies. More like Ox in Luann. When we little nerds were being picked on, here would come Don and our troubles were over.
Crusty snow can be very hard on dogs. Several years ago my partner and I were ATV riding at the cottage on New Year’s Eve, and way, was back in the woods we came across a beagle. This was very late (after midnight), and it was extremely cold. There was a snow earlier in the week, which was followed by a thaw and then a deep freeze. This poor beagle was near death – it was so exhausted that it let me pick it up and place it in my partner’s lap, then stayed there for the ATV ride back to the camp. I would never have believed that a dog would stay so calm on a noisy machine with complete strangers. His legs were all cut up from plowing through the crusty snow.
When we got back to the camp I gave him some food (I couldn’t believe how much food a beagle could hold) and found a radio collar tag on him with a phone number on it. I called the number, and it was the owner. Apparently he had been rabbit hunting on Boxing day and the dog got onto a rabbit. Usually rabbit dogs will chase the rabbit back to the hunter, but this rabbit was particularly determined and led the dog deep into the woods. Most rabbit dogs have GPS transponders on their collars in case something like this happened, but the batteries on this one went dead. The owner had been going back every day after looking for the dog and couldn’t find any sign of him. He had a good reason or not finding him: We found the dog 25 miles from where he first went into the woods. Anyway, the owner was very relieved, and came to pick up his very tired (but very well fed) hunting companion that night.

If you don’t have a date on Valentine’s Day, you should at least have a Nate.
