Here’s a few lines from an old song, done by Doris Day, Perry Como, and I’m sure others – available on YouTube:
I love you a bushel and a peckA bushel and a peck and a hug around the neckA hug around the neck and a barrel and a heapA barrel and a heap and I’m talkin’ in my sleep
I went to elementary school in the 50’s, and I remember being taught about pecks. (It’s about two gallons.) But I have to admit that I have never, outside of those classes, had any reason to refer to a peck or in any way make use of the knowledge. It was a hangover, even back then, from the days in which the U.S. was an agricultural society. I suppose someone thought it was important that we know what it was, event though everyone who had any reason to know already knew. .Watterson, in fact, didn’t know what a peck was, either, since it’s a unit of volume, not weight.(I say didn’t know, because I’m sure hundreds of people have corrected him by now.)
That’s why smart countries went Metric years ago. Actually the USA did in the 1860’s, but we still allow the idiotic sold systems to be used in commerce.
♪♫Oh the barrel, half barrel, gallon, half gallon, pint pot, half a pint, gill, half a gill, quarter gill, nipperkin and a round bowlHere’s good luck, good luck, to the barley mow♪♫
There was a song, whose lyrics I partially know:*“I love you a bushel and a peckBushel and a peckBushel and a peck*I love you a bushel and a peck????”*VERY catchy tune and deep lyrics
It’s still common practice to report harvest yield, regardless of the crop, in ‘bushels per acre’. The capacity/volume measure is preferred because the weight can vary quite a bit, depending on the % of moisture content.

A bushel’s a unit of volume. Is this Calvin’s mistake, or Bill’s?

It’s not a measure of weight. It’s a measure of volume. Odd that Watterson didn’t know that.

Over the years I’ve encountered many obscure measurement units. For example, how many fathoms in a league? How many rods in a furlong?
