The 100 billion was Iranian assets frozen form many years since the original hostage crisis. It was their money, not a giveaway of US taxpayer money. I think tying to establish normal diplomatic relationships and trying to work towards solutions with Iran is certainly much better than another trillion dollar war that costs thousands of American lives and casualties or the Crus solution of carpet bombing. I really wish that those who want to go to war would be given a rifle and be the first to go in country.
Iran’s agreement to shut down its nuclear weapons program was the most significant contribution to world peace in a long time. All those involved in the negotiations deserve our praise and thanks. And maybe a Nobel Peace Prize.
“Iranian assets frozen”….does that mean the US piled up Iran’s cash and gold in secure rooms and let it sit untouched?-“Iran’s agreement to shut down its nuclear program was the most significant contribution to world peace….” !!!Do you mean like Clinton got North Korea’s “agreement” on their nuclear program, but the North Koreans kept on working, and now claim they tested a new “H” bomb????-(No true “world peace” until Messiah Jesus comes back and takes charge of earth’s government. At Armageddon in Israel, Jesus will punish those armies of the Anti-Christ and set up God’s Peaceful Kingdom that will end wars for a thousand years! )
Has anyone here thought about the younger generations in Iran who look to the west and other countries and want to emulate their prosperity. Give them hope and opportunity and they may well work with the west and modify the way those governing their country interact on the world stage.
As in USA in the 1960’s, you cannot put everyone in prison or intimidate everyone. Changes will be made.Ghana took years to make the British Empire leave India. How you influence the young influences the future.
Yes, I heard about this. Our American president wrote a giant novelty check for $100 billion to a nation which supports terrorism. At first I thought it was the NRA, then ISIS. I see now it’s only Iran, thanks Mikey, for clearing that up. I thought it was serious for a moment.
Reagan just gave them weapons, like to blow up our Marines in Beirut.
That Iran will now start shipping more oil to fuel the world-wide glut on the market, will have a much bigger impact than giving them $110 billion of THEIR money back.
Our three trillion plus dollar investment in true terrorism in Afghanistan and Iraq, that will only increase over time, with poor results, is the result of Cheney,Rumsfeld, Bush policy, and ignored the “Powell Doctrine”, even lying to him to get the lies before the UN they wanted to sell their phony war, planned before they were even elected by SCOTUS.
Iran will reap significant economic benefits from the nuclear deal because many sanctions levied against Iran will be lifted as long as Iran complies with restrictions on its nuclear program. But it’s not like Iran will automatically receive a check. The toon plays on fears, but is simply not the case.
As for this cartoon, people forget the funds that were released were Iranian property. The funds were frozen by President Reagan after bombing of the US Embassy on April 1983.Sixty-three people were killed, including 17 Americans. Among the dead were CIA’s top Middle East analyst, Robert Ames, CIA Station Chief, Kenneth Haas and several CIA staff members.
Six months later, the Marine barracks were destroyed in the same manner that Embassy was, killing 241 servicemen. Again, Iran was believed responsible.
The Embassy was moved to a more secure area in East Beirut. In September 1984, 15 months and 2 days after the first Embassy bombing, the temporary Embassy in Beirut was attacked, killing 2 US soldiers. There were no Benghazi type hearing as to why 3 attacks could occur against US interests in the same manner, in the same city, in a little more than 15 month period.
Even though Iran had been implicated in all the attacks, the Reagan Administration continued to engage in back channel negotiations with the Iranians for release of US hostages in Lebanon. The Administration continued to trade weapons in hope of getting the hostages released.
What Obama did is no different than what many Presidents in the past have done; exchange prisoners. Somehow, to conservatives because Obama did it, it is a great wrong.
Iran continues its ICBM development/acquisition program. Nobody builds ICBMs to carry conventional weapons, including Iran. Anybody who believes Iran has stopped their nuclear weapon development program is deluded. And yes, I’m including our spineless gray worm of a president among the deluded.
