Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson for February 01, 2016
Transcript:
Phoebe: I like this song. Let's see what it is. Dad: And thanks to your phone, now you know! When I was young, if the guy on the radio didn't tell you what a song was, you just didn't know...and then when you heard it again later, it was magic. Phoebe: So you're saying there's beauty in simplicity? Dad: I'm saying I'm insanely jealous of your cool toys.

Phoebe’s Dad is possibly my favourite cartoon character ever. He’s got real depth of personality, a solid knowledge of his own motives and a refreshing honesty about them. I’ve met real people with less depth. If he’s not drawn from real life, I’m in awe of Dana for inventing him (and if he is, then Dana’s lucky to know him).

SoundHound is amazing. If that is the app she’s using.

There are still some songs from the 1970s and 80s that I don’t know the title of. Stations would play three songs in a row and “the guy on the radio” wouldn’t say who the artists were.

Actually, there was an app for that in my last not-quite-smartphone, a Sony Ericsson. I don’t remember what the app was called, but it was neither Soundhound nor Shazam.

I have always contended that Phoebe’s parents are Dana and her husband.

That you can wave your phone in the air like a wand and immediately know its name and probably download it on the spot is magic, and I won’t be told otherwise. (I love living in THE FUTURE!)

Phoebe’s dad eyes look great when they are outlined like in this strip. Sometimes when they aren’t outlined, Charlie Brown style, the colorist still tries to distinguish the white part (which name escapes me, shame on me) from the iris and it looks weird.

It’s SO nice to have at least one comic on my daily list that isn’t devoted to telling me and my fellow Olds that Things Were Simpler and Better Then. Those weren’t “good old days.” They sucked. We were just younger then, and that was Our World.

In the early aughts, I used to keep a Composition book within a close radius to my stereo precisely so I could furiously jot down lyrics to a song I heard if I liked it. Then later, I’d search the lyrics on Google to see if the name of the song came up.
