Stan’s keen senses are muted by that coating of a thousand pounds of fat…

That is one polite doggy. Listen up Stan, dogs can smell stuff coming 100 miles away.

What do bovines know? They don’t even have enough sense not to get mutilated by alien visitors.

Is Stan lying down? The old saying is that cows will lie down before a rain. Maybe he’s getting mixed signals.

Judging by how accurate the Weather Channel can be, though, I’d rather take my chances with Stan.

I asked a farmer once about cows laying down if it’s going to rain and he laughed. They only lay down if they are tired.

chickens will tell you how long the rain is going to last. If they stay under shelter it is going to be a short storm, if they head out and resume pecking around, it’s gonna last a while.

barbfrost–another take on the old adage is when the cows lie down and chew their cud, it will be fair weather.

ahappystamper–We have heard this too and the wild birds do the same thing and from what we have observed of the birds we feed, it is quite accurate….

We can get into “When the morning sun is red, the ewes and lambs go wet to bed.” That might depend on where the saying originated…

My Scottish grandmother would tell me, “If the morning sun is grey, it will be a bonnie day.”

hopeandjoy2 - We were taught that Red sky at night, sailor’s delight. Red Sky in the morning, sailor take warning. I guess your grandparents were landlubbers!

Stan should go to the barn too!

Mature Canadian–You are right, this paternal grandmother was a landlubber! She left Scotland when she was 13 for the states and didn’t think too much of the ocean crossing.

It seems the morning grey sky would benefit the sailors as well and yes, I have heard the Red sky at night, sailor’s delight as well as the red morning, warning. I enjoy hearing axioms of times past as you must too.

I did have an Uncle back in the late 1700’s, and 1800’s that sailed a merchant vessel–He liked Barbados (sp?)so well he stayed there for 18 years before returning to Massachusetts. Would have liked to have known more of that story–the whys and wherefores!!!
