I learned something new today. The Brits prefer the spelling “jewellery” over “jewelry”. But what do you expect from people who drive on the wrong side of the road.
(And for an interesting linguistic comparison, check today’s “Heart of the City” for “doofhead”.)
G’day Jason, JFri, Dry, Barb, Ottod and all Meggsie’s mates.
It must be that ‘Boofhead’ used in relation to a person is an Australian expression. The word is derogatory and means that the person so described is considered a buffoon.
It was also the name of an extraordinarily popular Australian comic character who continually misunderstood situations or what people were saying to him. The strip, which was naively drawn with delightfully naive humour, took its name from the expression, it did not introduce it to the language although Boofhead’s fans never looked at him in a derogatory way. I should know, I have been an avid Boofhead fan since he first appeared circa 1948.
A typical piece of Boofhead humour is when his mother tries to get him out of bed to go to work.
She says,”Boofhead, wake up!”
Boofhead replies,”Can’t.”
“Why not.”
“Ain’t asleep”.
(Sheesh, yes, I know, but it is addictive).
It seems the name is also applied to certain leatherworking tools.
