Actually the abbreviation Mrs., as in Mr. and Mrs., means Mistress as in the wife used to be the Mistress of the house that she lived in with her husband the Mister (Mr.). Pretty weird the way that got turned around ain’t it.
It’s funny how Mister turned into Mr. and Mistress turned into Mrs. and then Mistress took on a whole new connotation to it.
