My parents divrced when I was four. Neither ever said a bad word about the other until I was grown and moved out and could make my own evaluations. The wonder to me then was not that they divorced, but that they ever married in the first place: polar opposites. Dad was very happy with his second wife.
Gil has figured out for himself his dad is a deadbeat with or without Grandma’s input. It is wise of parents not to badmouth the ex to their kids but it must be hard when a kid asks, “Mommy why doesn’t Daddy want to see me?”

Yes, Gil, it was as Grandma shared! Gil seems to be taking it well!

I’m just glad that he has someone he can talk to about it.

Kids will figure it out by themselves.

My wife and I never badmouthed our children’s father in front of them. We let his own deadbeat behavior do that for us.
