At least if he stays on the team, he can get his varsity letter. So he can still brag about it later in life, even though there isn’t really anything to brag about.
Of course, requirements and/or calculation methodologies will vary between institutions, conferences, and leagues, but never playing will always result in never getting that letter jacket . . .
